OMSAA parameters show no databases

Reported by simont | January 28th, 2009 @ 12:03 AM

I fired up the new AMI using the console with the access and secret keys in the user data section of the advanced options, as per the original docs.

The instance comes up fine but then when I come to try and create a new OMSAA parameter file there are no databases listed in the form. i can see them in S3, perhaps some config problems at my end?

Also, if i try to view the nodes I get an error for some reason. THere should probably be some more friendly error message for whatever is going wrong.

    • Tag set to access, keys
    • State changed from “new” to “invalid”

It seems that the user data wasn't properly set when launching the instance. The system threw this error RightAws::AwsError: AWS access keys are required to operate on EC2 when it was launched.

This is why you didn't see any databases (it wasn't able to save/retrieve them from simpleDB) and the nodes failed because it couldn't access the node listing.

I will see about adding a fail fast error message to the rails application if the AWS keys were not properly set on launch. If the user doesn't set the keys properly, the only solution is to shut the instance down and re-launch it properly.

I thought it was something like that. Lets update the documentation so its clear how to do this using the AWS console - I thought I did it correctly but clearly not. :)

    • Tag changed from access, keys to access, documentation, keys

Brian will be updating the documentation when he collects screenshots for the paper. I'll confirm this with him.
